"I am certain there is too much certainty in the world."
—Author Michael Crichton
> delusional optimism | certainty
"A lot of error is random," leading psychologist Daniel Kahneman said in a 2017 interview, "and there is a radical underestimation of the amount of random error in people’s thinking."
Certainty is a ghost and a clever trick performed by the natural world. It can leave us believing we're smarter than we could ever hope to be. ⚠️
- The illusion of certainty can leave us vulnerable as consumers, too.
"Across dozens of studies spanning more than two decades," scholars wrote in 2015 for the Harvard Business Review, "consumer and social psychologists have shown that people who are certain of their beliefs are more likely to buy, buy sooner, and spend more."
"Certainty is the catalyst that turns attitudes into action."
- It's not always facts that matter most to human beings. Perceived certainty, as opposed to justifiable certainty, is necessary for us to function, even if it’s far from justified.
We have boundless and comically firm views and opinions to share with an equally boundless lack of evidence to support them.
